Sr. Database Administrator
Senior Database Administrator – Remote (Edmonton, Alberta) – Contract 6 months with possible extension for another 6 months, Canadian work authorization required.
Job SummaryThe Database Administration team is working on several large projects aimed at optimizing database operations. This role will review and consolidate SQL Server licensing costs, implement database monitoring across the client environment, and create reporting options to elevate critical database issues to management.

Responsibilities- Provide technical expertise in database management systems to support systems development and operational activities.
- Create and maintain the logical and physical structures of databases and related structures required by database applications.
- Monitor database applications, databases and DBMS statistics and recommend the appropriate changes to improve performance.
- Maintain database authorization requirements.
- Maintain and enforce database security standards and procedures.
- Evaluate application and user requirements and recommend appropriate database modifications.
- Provide technical expertise to development teams, Application Maintenance Services and business teams if engaged.
- Perform troubleshooting activities for database problems, database software problems and database application problems.
- Perform DBMS software installations, plan and test upgrades.
- Plan, test and implement software patches and application updates or upgrades.
- Disaster recovery preparation and testing.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation.
- Develop and automate system related procedures.
- Perform problem diagnosis, troubleshooting and resolution.
- Monitor on-going operations and perform on-going system administration tasks: release new versions; database tuning; capacity planning; historical archiving; database consistency and integrity checking; log file analysis; job scheduling; scripting; indexes; reorganizations; change control; and server requirements analysis.
- University graduation in computer science or a related discipline and 4 years relevant experience; OR 2-year diploma in computer science or a related discipline and 6 years relevant experience; OR 1-year certificate in computer science or a related discipline and 7 years relevant experience; OR a currently active professional certification or accreditation and 8 years relevant experience.
- Proposed resource has agreed to a Criminal Records Check and Enhanced Security Clearance including a credit check prior to commencement.
- 8 years of DBA experience within a complex or public sector environment.
- 2 years of Experience and technical knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server.
- 4 years of Experience as a SQL Infrastructure DBA (Backups, replication, installation, configuration).
- 8 years of Experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2016 or higher.
- 4 years of Experience with PowerBI, PowerView, Microsoft SQL Reporting, and Analytical Services.
- 4 years of Experience with SQL Server High Availability Groups.
- 6 years of Experience working with querying data with Microsoft Transact-SQL Server.
- 1 year of Experience with Amazon Web Services databases.
- 1 year of Experience with Azure SQL.
- 1 year of Experience with migrating on-premise databases to Azure or AWS.
- 1 year of Experience with open‑source databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, CosmosDB, etc.
- 1 year of Experience with PowerBI querying Azure SQL.
- 1 year of Experience with SQL Server Integration Services.
- 4 years of Experience with SQL Server replication.
- 2 years of Experience with troubleshooting performance issues within SQL Server 2016 or higher.
- 4 years of Experience working in a Help Desk type of environment where the work is delivered through a ticket or email.
- 4 years of Experience working in a multi‑tenancy environment where developers do not have access to secured environments like User Acceptance Test or Production.
- 1 year of Experience working with Oracle 19c or higher.
