ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Shift Supervisor Transit Enforcement, this position is responsible for enforcing the Region and local municipal by-laws applicable to Transit, the Criminal Code of Canada, and other related federal and provincial statutes on or in relation to all Regional Transit and affiliated properties. Also provides customer service assistance and security protection to Regional Transit patrons, equipment and properties.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Provides guidance, training and oversees the work of staff to ensure the consistent and non-discriminatory enforcement of the Region's and local municipal by-laws applicable to Transit, and the enforcement, processing and arresting of persons in contravention of the Criminal Code of Canada, and other related federal and provincial statutes on the Region's Transit and affiliated properties.
  • Maintains operating protocol with Regional Police, enforcement agencies and court services.
  • Assists Regional Police in criminal investigations as required.
  • Issues and monitors the issuance of appropriate offence notices, summonses, or appearance notices to individuals for non-compliance.
  • Conducts investigations and resolves issues relating to infractions, fraudulent activities regarding transit fares, etc.
  • Provides training to staff.
  • Provide first-level emergency response assistance at the Region's Transit and affiliated properties.
  • Conducts and schedules patrols of Region Transit premises and equipment, protects site or evidence, obtains statements from witnesses, and provides first aid and/or assistance to passengers, employees, and emergency services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with Branch and Department objectives.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Successful completion of a Community College Diploma in Law Enforcement or related field or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in law enforcement including customer service.
  • Valid First Aid Certification in CPR level "C" with AED.
  • Minimum vision and hearing standards as defined by the relevant governing bodies.
  • Successful completion of the Skills Assessment and the physical fitness requirements.
  • Medical screening and psychological testing, interview and assessment, all as defined by the Constable Selection System.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Police Background Investigation for the purposes of obtaining Special Constable Status ability to qualify.
  • Successful completion of the Special Constable training program.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices as they relate to Special Constables.
  • Ability to interpret and apply Standards, Acts, Legislation, By-laws, Regulations and other related provincial and federal statutes as they relate to offences and enforcement on transit property under Special Constable authority.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate the Region's core competencies.
  • Intermediate MS Office skills and use of virtual platforms.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to connect with a range of internal and external partners while focusing on fostering collaborative work relationships.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise good judgement and discretion in dealing with the public.
  • Ability to work in all/extreme weather conditions.
  • Strong ability to develop relationships and work in a welcoming and inclusive environment, where diversity is celebrated and where everyone can develop to their full potential.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" driver's license free of serious offences under the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Ability to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays and be on-call as required.
  • Ability to work outside regular business hours, as required.
